John Harrison's Credentials

Our chief scientist and managing director John Harrison is a lateral thinker dedicated to solving major problems like water, food, waste and global warming. John was educated in Tasmania and has science and economics degrees from the University of Tasmania and has the right background to do so. He started out as a scientist, worked for a period as an economist, consultant and accountant and has for the last ten years swung full circle back to his love of science. During the intervening period he has run a large number of businesses. He still operates a medium sized suburban accountancy practice (www.johnharrisonaccountants.com) and a multimillion dollar accommodation business (www.watersideaccommodation.com).

John has made it his business to understand not only the chemistry of most mineral binders but how their life cycle impacts on the environment. With a view to solving the main problems facing civilisation of water waste and global warming and because of the huge opportunities they offer for environmental improvement he has focused with a multidisciplinary approach on materials and in particular concrete, the material with the largest flow on the planet after water. He now has a number of important patents and is in the process of lodging more covering new breakthroughs he has developed.

Gaia Engineering is a technical paradigm in which man made carbonate is used to construct the built environment and both the TecEco and Gaia Engineering web sites have a great deal of information about the technologies involved..

John is a Tasmanian committee member of the Concrete Institute of Australia and received an Award of Merit in 2007 for his contributions to the industry. He is also a member of Materials Australia and was chair of AASMIC and in the latter role promoting the formation of a Materials Wiki on a co-operative basis with other organisations.

John believes permissions (standards, approval systems etc.) and rewards systems (greenpoints, offsets etc. ) in building and construction must be performance based and is working towards getting the building and construction industry carbon offsets ready. He has written extensively about the need for performance based rewards and permissions systems (See Newsletter82 and about the failure of prescription standards (see Newsletter62, and our web page titled Changing Permissions and Rewards Systems to Get Ready for Carbon Trading and Meet the Sustainability Challenge

John is keen to co-operate and join in with universities, green organisations and right minded companies and governments that understand and want to help bring about the changes required for the survival of civilisation. He realises that he cannot do this on his own.

John is prepared to give lectures and has already done so as a visiting speaker in both the georgraphy and engineering departments of his local university.

There is plenty of new innovative intellectually stimulating information on the TecEco web site authored by John that would form the basis of support for him and John believes he can add value to those institutions endeavouring to create the changes required and attract funding to them. John has achieved the level of media mention and referral below which has been important in mainstreaming his ideas.

He was recently given that title on The New Inventors, a prime time call-in/log-on-to-vote TV show in his native Australia. Harrison and his firm, TecEco, have developed several cement technologies that have
the power to effectively and economically transform city streets—and the built environment around
